LED vs CCFL

CCFL vs LED

I recently got a 23" Samsung monitor, my first LED-backlit display. I hadn’t noticed there being a big difference before, but my MacBook display now looks dim and hard to read.

Wow, you’re right. Crazy. BTW, what are those coloured squares (between “Samsung LED-backlit monitor” and “Macbook CCFL-backlit display”, under the respective pictures)?

Those are magnified portions of a block of white being displayed on each screen, so you can see the pixel structure and uniform brightness.

Ooh. Thanks.

is there a clear colour difference or is it just white balance in the photographs?

When they’re next to each other in a dark room I can easily tell the which has the yellow tint; if I recall correctly (and am not an idiot) I white balanced properly before taking these.
