Getting Through the Day

This really made me smile, guess it turns out Maths can be fun after all:

Teacher: “Well, I only mark a selection of the homework [that you do]”

Pupil: “Well then I’ll only do a selection of it”

As they say all over the web: “Hilarity ensued”

Nope, he wasn’t best pleased…

Oi, Remember Me?

Facebook - Remember Me

This week, the most monumentally fantastic thing happened in my life – Facebook finally added a bloody Remember Me button. At last, no more hitting the return key to login every time I close the browser – this is definitely going to increase the life of my keyboard dramatically…

Joking aside, why did it take so damn long? And I hate the patronising warning it gives when you check the box – guess they thought it was necessary though.

Warwick Uni Open Day

Just got home, so I thought I’d fill y’all in on what I did with my Wednesday:

  • Left here (Chiswick, London) at about 7:50 this morning, getting to Warwick (the town, not the university) at about 9:45.
  • Spent an hour and a half (yup, till 11:15) sitting in the biggest traffic jam ever with all the people going to the open day. The real kicker: that traffic, from just outside Coventry to the university, couldn’t have been more than two or three miles long.
  • Two hours looking round the campus, decided it was just like every other campus university I’d been to see so far. Queues for decent-looking food too long, so took the decision to go home.
  • Drove from 1:20 till 3:20, normal university open day lunch (sandwich, crisps, Coke from a service station) eaten in the car.

So if we add that all up, it comes out to six hours driving and two hours at the actual university. Not that I didn’t like the uni – I really did, but I’m starting to think that London’s the place I want to stay. And by the way, on the way home, the two miles that took an hour and a half before took just seven minutes. I’ve done nothing all day, but I’m still shattered. Might start swimming again, just so I’m not doing nothing.

TV Stats

Shocking television statistics in the RadioTimes magazine from this week:

  • 77% of all people who subscribe to high definition watch less standard definition now
  • Films and sport, the two genres with the most HD material, have seen the greatest increase in HD viewing hours

Boy, do I look surprised…

Sweets

Since I’ve had very little (free) time in London since the end of June, I only just started going through my “goodie bag” from the open day at Imperial College. One tiny thing that I really love is a tin that contains miniature smarties – this is tough to explain, but you click the middle to open it, and squish the outside to lock it. I don’t know if these tins are called anything in particular, but pictures below, video on YouTube.

Facebook Safety

This is interesting advice from Facebook that I’d never seen before – not a bad way of putting it, either:

Remember, unless you’re prepared to attach something in your profile to a resume or scholarship application, don’t post it.

Unfortunate that it’s hidden in help.php, the only link to which is right at the bottom of the page.

Browsing

Looking round the computer room, it’s a shame to see the number of people still using IE6 instead of the latest version of Firefox – either they don’t know it’s installed here, or they just don’t use it.

Unfortunate that the only alternative is Internet Explorer 6 – IE7, while still far from perfect, is at least better.

And most of all, I pity the poor people who don’t have tabbed browsing – honestly can’t remember how I coped before it…

Lame Excuses

I love you, METRO

Into London

Just got back from Regent Street – had a play with the new iPod Classic and Nano, and the interface on both of them (as well as slight size reductions) makes them absolutely lovely…

Saw the following poster on the tube – as far as I can gather, it’s a Barclaycard with integrated Oyster Card – at the moment, I’m imagining it automatically taking money out of your bank account to pay for the bus and underground, which would be nice and easy. I wish I could sign up, but apparently 18 is the age to be before Barclays gives you the ability to spend money that you don’t possess. It reads:
